Browsing around today on B&H Photo (as I do far more than I should) and I discovered a diffusion product from Lumiquest that I thought was pretty cool. The LumiQuest Soft Screen Diffuser is an inexpensive diffuser for the pop-up flash found on many pro-consumer cameras from Canon and Nikon. If you don't have a dedicated flash unit or find yourself without yours at some point this little diffuser that could may save the day.
While I wouldn't expect studio quality light it could make just enough difference to soften the look from the standard pop-up.
